20 June 2015 | by  (India)
Let's Put this short and simple...

Negetives : 1. Very weak and boring first half. 2. Not the best performance by Shradha Kapoor. 3. Missed Salman from the last film. 4.The length could have been edited a bit more. 5. Not the best use of Lauren.

Positives : 1. Flawless dance. 2. Awesome choreography. 3. One of the best second half comeback. 4. Fabulous Pravudeba. 5. Childish Varun + Matured Varun 6. One of the best mix of Indian classical + Bollywood + hip hop 7. Unstoppable Dharmesh. 8. Best of Disney India.

It surely deserves a shot.. go for it guys...the only thing that made me upset was the song bezuban...it had an unbelievable vibe and energy..but bezuban phir se really disappointed me.. anyways have fun guys

Remo is a Dilletantish Storyteller But A Virtuoso Choreographer; With A Committed Cast Who Give Honest Performances, He Gives Us A Mildly Yet Consistently Entertaining Work
16 February 2013 | by  (India)
Remo D'Souza is a dilettante in the art of storytelling. He isn't able to proficiently explain and construct his character motivations and narrative respectively nor is he able to write something truly novel. His films' themes are predictable and visibly repetitive, his plots have hardly any complexity and both his works are I believe borrowed from Hollywood ideas (his first feature film disaster 'F.A.L.T.U' was the Hindi version of a 2005 movie 'Accepted'). The only difference between his debut attempt and sophomore effort is that the latter has its heart in the right place for the obvious reason that the movie is all about 'dance' and not some faltu 's.h.i.t' (those who've watched Accepted will get the pun).

Yes, Remo D'Souza is a dilettante in the art of storytelling, but he is doubtlessly a virtuoso in the arts of dance and choreography and with the perfect theme to complement his talents, he is able to put up a mildly albeit consistently entertaining work that has a clearer vision and cleaner execution than his dismally wonky 'F.A.L.T.U'. His cast in 'ABCD' also has a major role in realizing his vision successfully, mainly because the actors who played dancers are dancers themselves in real life and so they are able to understand their characters and their struggles much easily without looking too artificial or schmaltzy.

ABCD, acronym for Anybody Can Dance, uses the classic theme of competitive rivalry with Jahangir Khan (played by Kay Kay Menon) the pompous, calculative and ego-maniacal head of a prestigious dance academy clashing with Vishnu (played by Prabhu Deva), the former head choreographer at his academy who quits after Jahangir relegates him to desk-job duties just to accommodate a new foreign choreographer. Jahangir's monomaniacal ambition is to win awards, name, fame, money and personal glory and he heedlessly crushes anyone who comes in his way. Vishnu on the other hand believes that the best man should win, and so he leads life righteously and encourages his protégés to do the same. When Vishnu moves in with his old buddy Gopi (played by Ganesh Acharya), he discovers immense latent potential in some of the youth there and makes up his mind to teach them everything he knows for free. The motley of youngsters is divided into two rival gangs, one led by Rocky and the other by D; Rocky's gang is less tapori (street) than D's gang, and they are the ones who readily accept Vishnu's offer. Slowly, Vishnu's team builds with D's gang joining in first, then a few others in the locality and lastly Rhea, the lead dancer of Jahangir Dance Academy who quits after being fondled by Jahangir during rehearsals. Both the rival groups enter a national dance event similar to the popular Dance India Dance show (most of the dancers in the movie are former contestants of the show) and try giving their best shot at winning the prestigious title, but Vishnu's group has to overcome many obstacles on the way.

A surprising thing about ABCD is that its story is'nt flat. I liked the way they used Ganesh Chaturti as an important motif in the film and was impressed by the manner in which Jahangir and Vishnu's ongoing rivalry parallels with Rocky and D's. There is a scene towards the climax of the film when we realize someone from Vishnu's group has switched loyalty and joined hands with Jahangir's group, and here we are kept in suspense for about a minute where we are keen to know whether the person whom everyone suspense indeed turns out to be the Judas. Well, I do not intend to reveal the suspense which is surprising in an effective way, and the entire sequence leading to the climax is well shot. My personal favorite dance sequence is when Vishnu's group perform dressed as clowns after being told off in the previous round that they were only selected to 'entertain like clowns and get TRPs'. The movie does drag in the middle and I feel it is because the screenwriters didn't have much in mind about what to do with all these dancers and so they added some uninteresting and trivial subplots that don't really add up to anything consequential.

The thing that's helped a lot in saving the film is the cast, which is quite likable. Everyone in the theater except me knew the dancers since I'm the only guy who doesn't watch Dance India Dance, yet I smiled often at the cast's peppy presence and genuine attempt at filling their roles; it shows that despite being paid comparatively marginal fee and having zero or little acting experience, these dancers at least bother trying unlike those mega- stars like Salman and Akshay Kumar who've being doing every new role on autopilot. I felt throughout ABCD that Prabhu Deva really cared about the film, and this could be seen in his performance; he is no Gene Kelly, he has little of Kelly's suaveness and charisma but in this particular film, his lack of screen presence works to an extent as his character is supposed to be selfless plus he does compensate for that in his lengthy but exciting dance number. Ganesh Acharya's casual charm made him noticeable but he has got to lose some weight. The dancers all try hard, especially the guy who plays the alcoholic (but his solo creeped me out) and bubbly Lauren Gottlieb whom I instantly recognized being a fan of So You Think You Can Dance. Kay Kay Menon has the best part in the film, and he shines during the movie's resolution which I won't reveal!

The title ABCD reminds me of the Pixar film Ratatouille; while the former doesn't explicitly state the relevance of the title, the latter does and the quote, which applies to ABCD goes like this: 'not everyone can be a great artist(or dancer), but a great artist can come from anywhere'. I am satisfied.

A decent story, let down by silly gaffes due to silly gaffes and weak first half
12 June 2015 | by  (Bangalore, India) .
What works:

1. The core story - though on the surface, it seems to be a cliché around love, sacrifice and longing, it has it's soul in the right place.

2. Great performances by Vidya Balan and Rajkumar Rao.

Where it fails:

1. Fist half is too weak. Too many intertwined sub-plots and connected stories take long to setup the premise.

2. Lack of attention to obvious details: Majority of the story is in flashback, set 21 years back from today, which means it's set in 1994. Yet you get to see Samsung mobiles with front facing cameras, characters taking and sharing selfies, and worst of the lot, mobile internet and lightening fast internet in the midst of a jungle which can send a video file through in 5 secs!

Overall, a lost opportunity to create a good evergreen movie due to silly mistakes and gaps in script-writing....

Kudos to Indian Cinema
25 August 2013 | by  (India) .
Rather than writing a long review explaining the Pros and Cons this is Indian Cinema which now is evolved.

Rather than pleasing the masses they have now gone ahead and showed the truth.

The beauty is that even when the audience knows that what has to happen in the end The director still holds us to the movie.

It can be said now that filmmakers in India can boldly make real-life stories without fear of controversy or censorship, this may be the best way to approach important stories that must be told.

A Must Watch film and good job by Shoojit Sircar.

Well Done Team of Madras Cafe.

The streets of crime can also lead sometimes to empathy- this strong message has been given by this matured movie.
21 February 2015 | by  (Ahmedabad, India)
#Badlapur : A Sriram Raghvan movie Badlapur, starring Varun Dhawan & Nawazuddin Sidiquie, has been released. A revenge saga of Raghu, who's wife and son has been killed by Layak during the bank robbery in Pune, in presence of his partner. His partner ran away, and Layak got arrested. Court gives him 20 years punishment in jail. But, because of his illness, court gives order to bail him. Meanwhile, during these years, his partner never caught by police. He is so set with his wife and owning a restaurant. When Raghu got news of him, he takes revenge from the partner and his wife. Then one interesting character of Jhimlee is also there, who is a girlfriend of Layak. Layak loves her, as much as she does. What will Raghu do to take his revenge from these people, to know that you have to watch this. The story is not new, but the presentation was good. The first robbery scene was taken in just a long shot. Then when Varun saw his dead son, the dance of Huma, the coffee shop scene of Varun & Yami, the lift scene just before the interval, the raining scenes, the climax scene where Nawaz fights with Varun in his room containing the toys, photos of his son and wife & many more are fabulous scenes of this film. Dialogues and screenplay are good enough to engage the audience. Sriram has directed this film brilliantly. He chooses the best cast ever. Varun gave a superb performance. This film can be counted in his best movies in the future. Nawaz gave as usual, Faizal type performance. Whenever he tries to do comedy, the audience gives appreciation. Huma gave such a fantastic performance in her fantastic role. Divya Dutta is as usual. Vinay Pathak is too good. His expressions are so real. Radhika also gave a nice performance. But, my favorite Yami once again fail to give more than 10 minutes performance. What the hell is going with the directors! This film is different from the other revenge saga, because there is no violence except few scenes. Women are also the part of the story, and which can give a thought to the viewers. Music is just outstanding, but, only Jee Karda fits to the taste. It is the story of badman to good man & good man to the bad one. The streets of crime can also lead sometimes to empathy. This is the story of a man becoming the beast and the beast becoming the man. Go for it.

Jolly Bad
11 April 2012 | by  (Delhi)
Sajid Khan should try his luck in Las Angeles. He made an Above Average which turned out to be a Block Buster than came Housefull which was plain average but again a block buster. Now with housefull 2 his wish to make disgusting movie is fulfilled. But again a super hit

This is the most confusing movie ever in world cinema. It makes a complete mockery of cinema. Their is no plot in the movie to discuss, but again this a brainless comedy. Now is this a comedy movie. It doesn't make you laugh in fact it is an acid test for your funny bone. If someone can laugh in this movie than he should not watch great comedy or he will die laughing.

Performance wise Akshay did the great job but lines are so bad that he won't make you laugh. John is not good at comedy but he tried his best. Ritesh is as he is. Shreyas is a good actor and he deserve better role. Pity here is that Rishi Kapoor who has just given an outstanding Do Dooni Chaar and Agneepath is given a worst character to play. Randhir Kapoor is an average actor but again his character is similar to Rishi's. Mithun is brilliant but he is not their to make you laugh. Boman has 10mins role. Sorry but no need to tell about actresses.

I wonder when will Sajid deliver flop as I want him to come back to hosting shows. But no time soon as he is delivering blockbusters. This movie is no better than some c grade comedies like Buddha mar Gaya or Chatur Singh.

A Movie that makes you think about it even when the lights are back on!!
11 November 2011 | by  (Delhi, India)
FILM: When you think about a film by Imtiaz Ali, you only see an entertainment tag to a film, and also very good script writing. But seeing the promos of Rockstar made me think what Imtiaz is up to now. After giving a great film like "Jab We Met" and a mediocre film like "Love Aaj Kal", I was expecting a cheesy Love Story with a good entertaining factor. I won't say this movie doesn't have any cheesiness, but yes it's in a very low dosage. People going for just entertainment will actually love half of the movie. People going to see a Romantic flick will love the whole film. There are some very good comic punches in the film, and some very humiliating parts too. I won't use any spoilers, but yes the first half is full of comic scenes.

ACTING: Ranbir kapoor is at his best here. After giving a great performance in Rajneeti, this guy has shown his serious part again, in more of sadder way. Nargis Fakhri is very good to look at, most part of the film you will just look at her and won't even hear what anybody is saying, but when you see her talking, the jaw just falls down, she does not have those acting skills at all, it's like the start of "Katrina Kaif" again. But she has a great future ahead of her for sure. Kumud Mishra and Piyush Mishra never disappointed in their acting, both did a great job, especially Piyush Mishra.

DIRECTION & CINEMATOGRAPHY: Now the direction was really top notch in this movie, it was particularly flawless in every aspect. Imtiaz has a tendency to deepen the character development, and he has done this with great enthusiasm. The character Development of the "Rockstar" is very good and keeps you on your seat. The Cinematography was also great, from the walking sides of Delhi University to the scenarios of Kashmir and Prague was immensely intriguing.

STORY: The Story of the movie had some parts that all Hindi romantic have usually, for a time you would wonder of a "Yash Raj" film being shown. But the turn of events and the whole movement of the story were good. The only problem being that the whole movie was a "drag/stretch". This movie if made shorter, would have gained more audience.

MUSIC: I would say the music (by A.R. Rahman) is damn good. From "Jo Bhi Main" to "Tum Ho", the scores are really beautiful, and stays in your head for a very long time. Sadda Haq already being the favorite among the youth has a good adrenaline rush factor in it. The movie being pretty much mediocre, the music actually makes the movie very good.
